A meme generator is a tool that adds caption text to an image
template and exports it as a shareable picture. This one runs in your browser, needs no account, and
pairs every template with its origin and meaning.
Drag any line on the image to move it.
so the image never leaves your device.
How to make a meme
Four steps, no account, no install.
| Step | What you do |
|---|---|
| 1. Pick | Choose a template, or upload your own image with Use your own image. |
| 2. Type | Enter your top and bottom lines. Text wraps automatically. |
| 3. Place | Drag either line directly on the image to move it. |
| 4. Download | Hit Download PNG. The file saves straight to your device. |
What makes this different
Most meme makers hand you a blank canvas and nothing else. You end up with a template you can
edit but can’t read — you don’t know where the image came from, what the format is supposed to
say, or whether you’re using it the way everyone else does.
Every template on MemeYell carries three things the editor alone can’t give you: where the image
originally came from, what the format actually means, and a bank of captions that fit its rhythm.
That’s the whole reason this site exists.
Limits and honest caveats
- Impact isn’t installed everywhere. The classic meme font is standard on Windows
and macOS. On some Linux and Android devices the browser substitutes a similar condensed face, so
your text may sit slightly differently than on a desktop. - Very large images are scaled down. Anything over 1000px on its longest side is
resized before editing, which keeps the editor responsive but caps export resolution. - Template frames are not ours. Most meme formats are screenshots from
copyrighted film, TV or comics. We host them for transformative captioning and remove any frame on
request — see our takedown policy. - No animated export yet. The editor exports PNG only. GIF and video captioning
are not built.
Frequently asked questions
Is this meme generator free?
Yes. Every template and every editor feature is free to use, with no account and no
sign-up. Downloads are unwatermarked.
Do I need to create an account?
No. The editor runs entirely in your browser and nothing is saved to a server, so
there is nothing to sign up for.
Can I upload my own image?
Yes. The editor panel has a file field that loads any picture from your device,
which you can then caption exactly like a built-in template.
What font do meme captions use?
The classic meme font is Impact, in white with a heavy black outline and set in all
caps. The editor applies that styling by default and lets you change the colours.
Where do my memes get saved?
Straight to your own device as a PNG file when you press Download. Nothing is
uploaded to or stored on our servers.
