What actually counts as a meme
The word covers three different things that often get mixed up. An image macro is
a picture with caption text laid over it — the format most people mean. A reaction
image is a still used as a reply rather than a joke in itself. A catchphrase
is a phrase that spreads with no fixed image attached at all.

What this page does not cover
Two things share the word “meme” but are not what this site is about. Meme stocks
and meme coins are financial terms borrowed from internet culture — we deliberately
do not cover them. And in academic use, Richard Dawkins’ original 1976 sense of “meme” means any
unit of cultural transmission, which is far broader than the image formats here.
