Dog Side Eye Meme

Dog side eye memes are reaction images of a dog looking sideways at the camera with its head turned away, used for silent judgment: the treat you did not share, the walk you promised, the excuse nobody in the room believed.

Twelve frames: seven are side eye or side glance photographs, one is a resigned old dog, and the last four are the comparison family that judges in two panels.

The dog side eye meme collection

Honest caveat first: there is no single canonical dog side eye template the way there is a single doge. The current wave of it lives in short phone video, which template libraries do not hold. What we have are the still frames that carry the same look, and two of them are very good at it. Tap any tile to load it into the editor.

The grid is ordered by how much work the picture does. Suspicious Dog needs nothing from you. The pun dogs need a setup line. The four comparison frames need two labels and some care, because a two-panel judgment is the easiest thing here to aim at the wrong target.

Which one to use

Side eye is a specific emotion, and it is not anger, sadness or confusion. It is judgment that has decided to say nothing out loud. Match the frame to how much restraint the moment calls for.

The situation Use Why that one
Pure silent judgment, nothing else Suspicious Dog The truest side eye here. Head turned away, eyes cut back at the camera. No second panel, barely any text.
Judgment with a bit of smugness in it Doge Kabosu is side eyeing the camera with her paws crossed, which reads as knowing rather than suspicious.
The same look, different angle Doge 2 Another frame of the same dog, for when the first is too recognisable for your joke.
Waiting for a message that has not come Dog Waiting Chin down beside a phone, eyes sideways. The only frame here where the side eye is aimed at an object, not a person.
Setting up a pun you know is terrible Bad Pun Dog The sideways grin of somebody who is going to say it anyway. Top box is the setup, bottom box is the crime.
A dad joke, delivered without remorse Dad Joke Dog Same job as Bad Pun Dog with a softer face. For jokes that are affectionate, not annoying.
You are visibly out of your depth I Have No Idea What I Am Doing Dog The glasses and the sideways glance carry it. Best as a single caption, no setup line.
Quiet resignation, no complaint Dog Accepting Fate An old dog at sunset, eyes closed. Not a side eye, which is why it fits the moment after judging stops.
Then versus now, and now is worse Buff Doge vs Cheems The comparison format. Left is the confident version, right is the one holding on. Keep both labels short.
The same comparison, more upset Buff Doge vs Crying Cheems Dial up the second panel when the contrast is meant to sting a little more.
Scale, not strength Big Dog Small Dog Use when the joke is about size or importance rather than about capability.
Capability, side by side Strong Dog vs Weak Dog Bluntest of the comparison frames. Aim it at habits and situations, never at a person you can name.

Captions that work

The side eye caption has one shape: state what was said or done, then say nothing about how you feel. The picture is the reaction, so a caption that also describes the reaction does the job twice. A second box should be shorter and drier than the first.

Where dog side eye memes come from

The phrase is far older than the pictures. Know Your Meme traces the earliest known appearance of side eye to 19 March 1797 in a periodical, and records James Joyce using it in Ulysses in 1922. Merriam-Webster only added it in February 2017, noting that its own earliest example came from 1797. The gesture had a name for two centuries before the internet made it a genre.

The most famous dog side eye is one most people do not file under that heading. The doge photograph is a side eye. Kabosu, a rescued Shiba Inu living in Sakura, Chiba, was photographed at home by her owner Atsuko Sato and the picture went up on her blog on 13 February 2010. The pose that made it the most reproduced photograph of a dog in history is precisely this one: paws crossed, head level, eyes cut sideways at the lens. Kabosu died at home on 24 May 2024 at the age of 18. There is a fuller account of her on the doge meme page.

Several frames here come from the advice animal era of roughly 2010 to 2012, when a dog photograph plus two lines of Impact could stand in for a type of person. Bad Pun Dog, Dad Joke Dog and the dog in glasses share the sideways glance because they were shot by owners on cheap cameras, with the dog reacting to the person holding it rather than posing. That accident of amateur photography is much of why dogs dominate this genre and cats do not.

The comparison frames are the newest layer, grown out of doge derivatives and now the standard way to set a confident version of something beside a diminished one. The Cheems dog is widely reported to have been a Shiba named Balltze in Hong Kong, but we could not verify that against a primary source, so no dates are given for that animal.

Limits and etiquette

Every dog here is or was somebody’s real pet, which is the point of the genre and also its main constraint. Kabosu has a name, an owner and a date of death, and a cruel caption on her face reads differently from one on a stock photograph. The pun dogs belong to owners who posted them years ago expecting nothing.

One matched template is not in the grid for that reason. It is a candid photograph taken in a restaurant, showing a dog and several clearly identifiable people who did not choose to be in a meme. The dog in it does give a good side eye. We would rather not build a captioning page around strangers who were having dinner.

The four comparison frames need a separate warning. Strong versus weak, big versus small and buff versus crying are all formats that slide easily into mocking somebody body, ability or effort. They work when the two panels are the same person at different times, or the same situation before and after. They stop being funny the moment the right-hand panel is a real individual.

Last, saturation. Doge has been captioned so many times, and is now so tied to cryptocurrency, that many readers see it as advertising rather than a joke. Suspicious Dog and the waiting dog are far less worn. Your own dog is less worn still.

All frames here are third-party material, hosted for captioning only. Rights holders can use the takedown policy at /dmca/.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one dog side eye meme template?

No single canonical one. The closest in this collection is Suspicious Dog, whose head is turned away with the eyes cut back at the camera, and the doge photograph, which is also a side eye.

Which dog is in the doge photograph?

Kabosu, a rescued Shiba Inu who lived in Sakura, Chiba, in Japan. Her owner Atsuko Sato posted the picture to her blog on 13 February 2010.

Is the doge dog still alive?

No. Kabosu died at home on 24 May 2024 at the age of 18. That is worth knowing before you write something mean over her face.

How old is the phrase side eye?

Older than the internet. Know Your Meme traces the earliest known use to a periodical in March 1797, and it appears in Ulysses in 1922.

When did side eye enter the dictionary?

February 2017. Merriam-Webster announced it that month and noted that its own earliest recorded example of the phrase dates to 1797.

Which frame works with no caption at all?

Suspicious Dog. The look does the entire job, so posting it bare as a reply is often stronger than adding text.

Why are there no video clips here?

Most recent dog side eye content is short video from phone cameras. This is a still image editor, so the collection is built from still frames instead.

Can I use a photo of my own dog?

Yes. Upload it in the editor on this page. Your own dog is almost always funnier than a frame that has been captioned a million times already.
