Meme Dictionary
The meme dictionary explains what internet slang and meme
formats actually mean. Each entry gives the term’s origin with a date, its literal versus ironic
use, and real examples — not a guess at the definition.
How entries are written
Slang definitions online are mostly wrong, because they get copied between sites without anyone
checking the first appearance. Every entry here has to clear four things before it publishes:
| Requirement | Why |
|---|---|
| A dated first sighting | “It started on TikTok” is not an origin. A date and a source is. |
| Literal vs ironic reading | Most slang is used to mean the opposite of its literal sense. |
| Real usage examples | Cited from where the term actually appears, not invented. |
| An honest “we don’t know” | Where an origin is genuinely disputed, the entry says so. |

Limits
- Slang moves faster than any dictionary. Entries carry a date; a term’s meaning
can shift within months of it being written. - Origins are often genuinely disputed. Where sources disagree, the entry
presents the disagreement instead of picking a winner. - Some terms are crude. Where a term expands to profanity, we say so once,
plainly, and move on.
