Brainrot is the supposed decay of a person’s mental state caused by overconsuming trivial online content, and also the content itself. Oxford University Press named brain rot its 2024 Word of the Year on December 2, 2024, after a public vote.
Where brainrot came from
1854. Thoreau uses brain-rot in Walden as a complaint about a society that had stopped doing intellectual work. He is comparing it to potato blight, which is to say he means it as a disease of the collective, not a personality trait. The modern usage is closer to his than most people assume.
2023. The phrase resurfaces online, initially describing Gen Alpha language and the content producing it. The pivot point most often cited is Skibidi Toilet, an animated YouTube series created by Alexey Gerasimov under the name DaFuq!?Boom! in February 2023, about a war between toilets with human heads and characters with devices for heads. It is deliberately incoherent, extremely long-running, and enormously popular with children, which made it the reference case for what people meant by rotting content.
December 2, 2024. Oxford University Press announces brain rot as its Word of the Year, chosen with input from a public vote in which more than 37,000 people took part. Oxford recorded a 230 percent rise in usage between 2023 and 2024, and defined it as the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material considered to be trivial or unchallenging — and, secondarily, as the material itself. Oxford’s Casper Grathwohl noted the irony that the communities amplifying the term were doing so on the very platforms said to cause it.
Early 2025. Italian brainrot arrives and gives the abstract term a cast of characters. AI-generated creatures with mock-Italian names circulate on TikTok and YouTube Shorts. The first is generally taken to be Tralalero Tralala, a three-legged shark in Nike trainers: the audio came from TikTok user eZburger401 in January 2025, and on January 13, 2025 an account posted the shark image over it, reaching around 7 million views before deletion. Tung Tung Tung Sahur, an animate wooden log holding a bat, was posted by noxaasht in February 2025 and draws on the Indonesian Ramadan tradition of waking people for the pre-dawn meal. Ballerina Cappuccina, a ballerina with a cappuccino cup for a head, was introduced by aironicfun on March 19, 2025.
What brainrot actually means
The word does four different jobs, and most arguments about it are two people using two different senses. The Oxford definition covers the first two; the internet added the others.

The load-bearing detail is that brainrot is used most by the people it describes. A term coined as criticism was adopted as an identity, which is why you will see the same person call a video brainrot as praise on Monday and as a complaint on Tuesday. Both are correct usage.
How people actually use it
As a self-report. Someone posts a screen time figure or an obscure reference and captions it with brainrot. The claim is not that they are impaired; it is that they are too online, offered as a confession that expects no consequence.
As a genre tag. Creators label their own output brainrot to set expectations: no plot, no point, high density of references. Italian brainrot is the clearest example, and it is worth noticing how far the aesthetic travelled. Steal a Brainrot, a Roblox game released on May 16, 2025 that lets players buy and steal Italian brainrot characters, peaked above 25 million concurrent players in October 2025, the first single game recorded above that mark.
As a critique of AI content. Since 2025 the term has bled into complaints about machine-generated filler. Merriam-Webster named slop its 2025 word of the year, and slop and brainrot now get used almost interchangeably even though they are not the same thing: slop is about how content is made, brainrot is about what consuming it does to you. As a generational marker. Adults use it to name a thing children do; children use it to name a thing they enjoy. That double usage is why school-adjacent coverage of brainrot reads so strangely, and why the same phrase appears in worried parenting articles and in the bios of the accounts making the content.
Is brainrot offensive?
Not as a word, but it is contested. Nobody is insulted by the term in the abstract; people are insulted by having it applied to them. Used downward by age it functions as a claim that a younger person is intellectually damaged, which is the oldest complaint in circulation and has been made about novels, radio, television and video games in turn. Used sideways among peers it is a joke about shared habits and carries no sting. The word also implies a causal claim — that this content produces measurable cognitive harm — which Oxford was careful to hedge by writing supposed deterioration into the definition itself. That hedge is doing real work and most casual usage drops it.

Whether heavy short-form video consumption causes lasting cognitive change is an open research question, and we are not in a position to settle it. Anyone telling you it is proven either way is going beyond the evidence.
- Who actually created Tralalero Tralala. The audio is credited to a TikTok account that was subsequently banned, and the image to a second account whose video was deleted after roughly 7 million views. There is also a claimed precursor in October 2023 memes using the same phrase. Attribution here is soft.
- The exact 2023 revival path. Brainrot was in use before Skibidi Toilet, particularly in fandom contexts where it meant obsessive preoccupation rather than decay. How much of the 2024 surge came from that older sense is not established.
- Merriam-Webster’s 2025 pick. We have slop reported through wire coverage in December 2025 but could not load the dictionary’s own page to confirm the wording.
- Whether Italian brainrot is finished. Character creation slowed after mid-2025 while the Roblox game kept growing, which means the aesthetic outlived the trend that produced it. Where that goes next is not predictable.
