Sigma Meme: The Sigma Male Explained, From Blog Post to Playground Slang

Where the sigma meme came from

The sigma meme has two origin stories running in parallel. One is a blog post. The other is a piece of animal behaviour research from 1947 that was wrong, and that the scientist most responsible for popularising it later spent his career dismantling. The meme inherits the vocabulary of the second and the ranking system of the first.

• 1947 — Rudolf Schenkel publishes Expression Studies on Wolves in the journal Behaviour, based on unrelated wolves collected from zoos and kept together in captivity. He describes a lead wolf and a dominant female. This is where alpha enters the language.
• 1970 — L. David Mech publishes The Wolf: The Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species, which carries the alpha framing to a mass audience and becomes his best-selling book.
• 1999 — Mech publishes Alpha status, dominance, and division of labor in wolf packs in the Canadian Journal of Zoology, drawing on thirteen summers observing wild wolves on Ellesmere Island. His conclusion: a wolf pack is a family. The so-called alpha is a breeding parent, not a winner of contests. He now prefers breeding male, breeding female or simply male and female parent.
• After 1999 — Mech repeatedly asks his publisher to stop printing the 1970 book because its central framing is outdated. It remains in print until 2022. He also produces video explaining why the alpha concept is wrong.
• May 2010 — Theodore Beale, writing as Vox Day, posts Explaining sigma. Again. on his blog, describing the sigma as the outsider who does not play the social game and manages to win at it anyway, and who enrages alphas precisely by not acknowledging them.
• 5 March 2011 — Beale posts the full socio-sexual hierarchy on his Alpha Game blog: alpha, beta, delta, gamma, omega, sigma, lambda. The letter choice is not accidental; in statistics the lower-case sigma denotes deviation from a norm.
• 25 January 2021 — the term breaks containment. Twitter user @LilySimpson1312 posts a set of sigma infographics with a caption mocking them; the thread gathers roughly 190,000 likes, 25,000 retweets and 11,000 quote tweets. Forbes covers the pseudoscience behind it the following day.
• 2021 onward — the meme formats arrive: Sigma Male Grindset, Sigma Stare, and edits set to Patrick Bateman from the 2000 film American Psycho.
• Late 2022 — the Sigma Face trend, imitating Bateman blank stare, is popularised on TikTok by the creator @argenby.
• 4 March 2024 — TikToker @lawfreeza posts a video of voice messages in which a reply lands as erm, what the sigma?. The phrase spreads attached to a Squidward-like voice and riffs on the older catchphrase erm, what the deuce.

The sequence matters. Sigma went viral in 2021 because people were laughing at it, not because anyone was persuaded. Every large-scale meme format built on the word since then descends from that mocking thread rather than from the blog posts.

What sigma actually means

The word has drifted almost completely away from what it was coined to mean, and the two senses now coexist in the same sentence without either speaker noticing.

The wolf point is worth stating plainly because it is the load-bearing claim underneath the whole taxonomy. Alpha, beta and sigma are borrowed from a model of wolf packs that came from unrelated animals forced to share a captive enclosure. Wild packs do not work that way, and the researcher who did most to popularise the alpha framing published the correction himself in 1999 and asked his own publisher to stop selling his 1970 book. Sigma is a rank in a system that its own source discipline abandoned.

How people actually use it

In practice you will meet sigma in four places, and only one of them is sincere.

• As a compliment. He is so sigma, said about someone who did something unbothered or quietly impressive. This is the dominant use among younger speakers and carries no theory with it.
• As a flat exclamation. What the sigma, meaning what on earth, which since 2024 has been used mostly for its sound.
• As a face. Copying the Bateman stare in reaction to something described as sigma behaviour, a trend traced to late 2022.
• As a grindset joke. Edits pairing motivational audio with American Psycho footage, where the humour comes from the mismatch between the epic framing and the trivial achievement.

The generational split is the most reliable rule of thumb available. If the speaker is old enough to remember the January 2021 Twitter thread, sigma is probably being used as a joke about a discredited idea. If the speaker learned the word from short-form video after 2024, it almost certainly just means good.

Is sigma offensive?

The word itself is not a slur and is not crude. What makes it contested is where it came from: Theodore Beale, who coined it, is a writer widely documented as holding white supremacist and misogynistic positions, and the taxonomy was built inside the online manosphere as a way of ranking men. Anyone using sigma as playground slang in 2026 is almost certainly unaware of any of that, and the current usage carries no visible trace of the original argument. Both things are true at once, and that is the whole answer.

What we do not know

• The first use is not the earliest sighting. A post titled Explaining sigma. Again. is by definition not the first. The genuine first use of sigma in this sense is earlier than May 2010 and has not been located.
• The May 2010 date is inconsistently reported. Secondary sources give 16 May 2010, while the surviving permalink for that post reads 26 May. Blog migrations routinely shift dates, so the month is solid and the day is not.
• Authorship of the concept, as opposed to the label. Beale credits the wider Game blogging scene he was writing alongside. Whether the underlying idea was his or ambient in those circles is not settled.
• Mech and the publisher. It is documented that Mech asked repeatedly for the 1970 book to be withdrawn and that it stayed in print until 2022. Whether the 2022 withdrawal was a response to those requests or an ordinary commercial decision is not stated by any source found.
• Retraction is the wrong word, strictly. Mech did not retract a paper. He popularised an idea he had inherited from a 1947 captive study, then published research correcting it and campaigned against the term for decades. That is scientific self-correction rather than a formal retraction, and the distinction gets flattened in most retellings.
• No measurement of the split. There is no survey establishing what proportion of people using sigma today know its manosphere origin. The generational rule above is a pattern observed in usage, not a finding.
