The scene is not condescending at all

The meme reads it as smugness because a small, closed, knowing smile aimed slightly off camera looks identical to a smug one once you remove the sound and everything around it. Common mistakes
- Being openly rude in the bottom box. The template only works while the speaker stays polite. Insults collapse it into an ordinary jab.

- Using it to win an argument you are actually in. It is a closing move, not a rebuttal, and it convinces nobody who is still talking.

- Calling him Gene Wonka or Willy Wilder. The actor is Gene Wilder, the character is Willy Wonka, and both get mangled constantly.
- Attributing the image to the 2005 remake. Different film, different actor, different look. This still is from 1971.
Limits and etiquette
Be honest about the age. This template peaked between 2011 and 2015 and it is now firmly a classic rather than a current format. Posting it in a young audience space marks you as older than the room. That is not fatal, because everyone still reads it instantly, but novelty is not on offer.
There is a tone problem too. This is a template built for making somebody look stupid, and used against a real person in public it is condescension with a picture attached rather than a joke. The versions that still land are almost always aimed at the poster themselves.
